How Black Holes Form

How Black Holes Form

Black holes are born when very massive stars - much bigger than our Sun - reach the end of their lives. These giant stars are like cosmic giants that eventually run out of fuel.

When a massive star can no longer create energy in its core, gravity wins! The star collapses in on itself in a spectacular explosion called a supernova.

After the explosion, if the star was big enough, what's left behind collapses into such a small, dense point that it becomes a black hole. It's like squishing something huge into something tiny but keeping all the weight!

💡

Fun Fact!

Only stars that are at least 20-25 times more massive than our Sun can become black holes when they die!
